Group Piano

Keynotes Piano Classes are designed around how children learn best: together. In a joyful, collaborative setting, students learn through rhythm, creativity, composition, and play — staying engaged and motivated alongside their peers. Collaborative activities foster listening, teamwork, and the joy of creating music as a community.

Our carefully structured spiral curriculum introduces concepts in ways that grow with each child, revisiting skills through new songs, activities, and challenges so learning truly sticks. Every student progresses at their own pace with built-in differentiation, enrichment opportunities, and music that meets them where they are — helping each child feel successful, challenged, and excited. Learning together changes everything.

Why group classes

Three reasons kids stick with the studio.

  • Collaboration builds better musicians.

Kids learn faster when they play with others. Listening, timing, and confidence grow on the bandstand.

  • Lower pressure, higher confidence.

Group classes take the spotlight off any one student. Mistakes are part of the music, not a performance review.

  • More fun means more learning.

When students love showing up, they practice without being asked. The hobby sticks.

Little Keynotes — Ages 4.5–6 years

Little Keynotes is the perfect first step into piano playing for preschoolers and kindergarteners. Through singing, movement, finger plays, musical games, and playful piano songs, children build a strong musical foundation while having fun alongside new friends.

What will we do in class?

  • Games with embedded learning and collaboration
  • Activities to develop fine motor skills
  • Sing, move, and play piano in every class to internalize rhythm and beat

What will we learn?

  • Introduction of musical terminology and concepts
  • Finger numbers and coordinated finger skills
  • Piano key names with musical alphabet

What will we play?

  • Pre-reader music based on fun musical themes
  • Piano pieces with backing tracks
  • Improvised songs to encourage creativity

Each child has their own keyboard to explore during class, giving them plenty of hands-on experience every week. Our unique teaching approach allows every student to be supported and challenged at their own level, while small class sizes provide individualized attention alongside engaging group activities that bring music concepts to life.

No piano at home? No problem. While home practice is encouraged, it’s not required. Each family receives a piano book filled with simple at-home activities, plus access to videos that keep the music-making going between classes.

Keynotes Storytellers — Ages 6–9 years

From Keys to Tales: Inspiring Young Musicians

Our Storytellers curriculum goes beyond traditional piano lessons, immersing students in a world where music becomes a language of character, mood, feelings, and storytelling. Our innovative strategies for differentiation and cyclical learning structures mean that while our learners learn and play together, they are able to further challenge themselves individually when needed. This means that no learner is left behind nor held back. We cover every learning style through our delivery and ensure that every learner thrives.

Creative Learners

Through improvisation and composition, our learners explore how different ways of playing the piano can portray moods, characters, and storylines. Creative approaches are learner-centred and enable students to express themselves.

Performers

Our Storytellers learners perform every lesson. Structured performance time at the end sees all students performing both solo and as an ensemble.

Musical Elements

We discover what the elements are that make music and then match them to stories and characters. Would the Hare’s music be fast or slow? Would the Giant’s song be loud or soft? Storytellers learners develop the musical vocabulary to describe the impact of what they hear.

Listening

In our classes we listen to a variety of genres of music in order to develop appreciation for different styles, and the skills to describe how they are different.

Interval Training

To be able to master reading music, students need to understand intervals up and down, on the staff. We begin this important skill by using just one line, and building to all five.

Games

Games help to introduce and consolidate concepts and skills. Each game aims to embed learning, build collaboration, and is super fun.

Technique

Technique is addressed in a creative way where our Storytellers learners consider how their piano playing can sound like knocking on the door, or like a lullaby.

Rhythm and Pulse

Every lesson has activities that engage learners with rhythms: listening to them, tapping them, writing them, and creating them — through which they develop an excellent sense of pulse.

And while any student is typically in Storytellers for 1.5–2 years, the path is flexible and progress is always individualized. When the teacher feels a student is ready to advance to the next level, class placement can change anytime during the year.

Regular, short practice throughout the week is encouraged for consistent progress. Students will have a workbook, access to online practice videos, and a guide for activities to reinforce learning at home. Everything they need to be successful and confident.

Keynotes PLAY — Ages 8–11 years

Discover, Create, Excel: Connect Through the Keys

Designed specifically for older learners, KeyNotes Play fosters a collaborative and engaging environment, allowing students to explore and master the piano together. Clear challenges and differentiated tasks lead to motivated and committed learners.

Musical Autonomy

KeyNotes Play emphasizes autonomy, empowering older beginners to take control of their musical journey. We believe that freedom to explore and express themselves enhances the joy of learning.

Challenges

Every piece has two different versions and four ways of playing them, in order to layer up and build difficulty. Students can work through the various challenges, mastering each one before up-levelling. This is not only a great tool for learning in groups, it is also truly motivating for students.

Reading

Reading music is always a challenge for learners and we address this by using a variety of approaches. We also analyze pages together so that students can find answers for themselves.

Repertoire

Older learners require a certain type of repertoire to engage them. Minor keys, fast tempos, drum kit backing tracks — all contribute to giving them songs that they love to play.

Collaboration

The social setting of group piano is utilized to its full force in our KeyNotes Play classes. Students work together, help each other, encourage each other, and develop their own piano squad.

Aims & Objectives

Learning objectives are super clear in our KeyNotes Play workbooks; students know whether they are on track and can take ownership of their progress, developing their independent thinking skills.

Performing

Our KeyNotes Play learners perform every lesson. Structured performance time at the end sees all students performing both solo and as an ensemble. Additionally, students are invited to participate in 2 formal recitals each year.

Practice

Regular practice throughout the week is encouraged for consistent progress and prepares each student to fully participate with confidence in class.

Frequently asked

Questions parents ask about Group Piano.

Yes — and in many ways, it works better than traditional private lessons for a lot of students. It’s why we encourage all students to begin their piano journey in group. Group piano allows children to learn in a social, supportive setting where they stay engaged, motivated, and encouraged by their peers. Concepts are introduced in a structured, step-by-step way, and the group dynamic reinforces focus, confidence, and consistency. Students still progress individually and are assigned challenge portions as they are able, but they benefit from shared energy and community, which helps them stick with it long enough to truly build skill and confidence.

Always. Every program offers a trial class. Drop in, see if the class feels right, then decide. No commitment until you’re sure.

Our group piano classes are primarily organized by age, which helps ensure students are learning alongside peers at a similar developmental stage. Little Keynotes: 4.5-6 years. Keynotes Storytellers: 6-9 years (recommended minimum 1st grade). Keynotes Play: 8-11 years.

We offer year-round enrollment, so there’s no need to wait for a specific season to get started. Students naturally progress and level up throughout the year, and that’s all part of the process. We encourage families to begin whenever their child is ready — because the best time to start is now.

Each student progresses individually, even within the group setting. There is no fixed amount of time a student must stay in a level. Instead, advancement is based on mastery — things like skill development, finger dexterity, and overall understanding of musical concepts, as well as readiness to handle the increasing difficulty level. Your child’s teacher will guide this process and let you know when they are ready to move to the next level. General timelines: Little Keynotes approximately 1–1.5 years; Storytellers approximately 1.5–2 years; Keynotes Play approximately 2 years. These are simply estimates — our program is intentionally flexible and moves at the pace of each individual student. As students move through the program, they will never repeat the same unit or songs; every new unit introduces fresh concepts while reinforcing what they’ve already learned.

Less than you might think. We’d much rather see 10 happy, focused minutes than 30 minutes of frustration. Our class structure does most of the heavy lifting — home practice is meant to reinforce learning, not carry it. In Little Keynotes, there’s no formal home practice expectation. As students move into Storytellers and beyond, practice is encouraged, and most students naturally become more motivated to play at home (with the occasional gentle reminder!).

Enrollment includes everything your child needs to feel prepared, confident, and excited to learn. Students receive their first book, a music bag, and a binder (for older students) to keep their materials organized from day one. You’ll also have exclusive access to online videos that support learning at home, along with a steady stream of supplemental materials as your child progresses through the level. And of course, enrollment includes performance opportunities — giving students meaningful moments to share what they’ve learned and celebrate their growth.

Unlike many other studios, Melody Magic offers unlimited makeups. Sick day, sports tournament, family trip. With 6 hours notice, you will automatically get a make-up credit to use another day in the same level of class.

Group piano enrollment includes a 4-month minimum commitment. Group piano works best when students learn and grow together over time. Each class builds on the last, and consistency is key — not just for skill development, but for confidence and group connection. The first few weeks of learning something new can feel challenging for many students. The 4-month commitment gives them the time and support to move past that initial hurdle, gain momentum, and begin to truly enjoy and feel proud of what they can do. If you decide to withdraw, we ask for 30 days’ notice so we can offer your spot to a family on our waitlist.
